How to wash baseball caps - The Cap Dudes

Can Baseball Caps Be Washed?

The short answer is yes, baseball caps can generally be washed.
However, the cleaning method depends on the material and construction of the hat.
Here are some common methods:

1. Hand Washing:
   - Materials Needed: Mild detergent, a soft brush or cloth, cool water.
   - Steps:
     1. Fill a basin with cool water and add a small amount of mild detergent.
     2. Gently scrub the hat with a soft brush or cloth, paying attention to any stained areas.
     3. Rinse the hat thoroughly with cool water to remove all detergent.
     4. Gently squeeze out excess water (do not twist or wring the hat).
     5. Reshape the hat and let it air dry, preferably on a hat form or a clean, dry towel.

 2. Machine Washing:
   - Important: Only use this method if the hat is sturdy and the manufacturer’s care label permits machine washing.
   - Materials Needed: Mild detergent, a hat form (optional).
   - Steps:
     1. Place the hat in a protective mesh bag or a hat form.
     2. Use a gentle cycle with cold water and mild detergent.
     3. Remove the hat from the washer immediately after the cycle finishes.
     4. Reshape and air dry the hat as described in the hand washing method.

3. Spot Cleaning:
   - Materials Needed: Mild detergent, water, a soft brush or cloth.
   - Steps:
     1. Mix a small amount of mild detergent with water.
     2. Dip the brush or cloth in the soapy water and gently scrub the stained areas.
     3. Rinse with a clean, damp cloth to remove any soap residue.
     4. Allow the hat to air dry.

Important Tips:
- Avoid using bleach or harsh detergents.
- Do not put the hat in the dryer as it can cause shrinkage and damage.
- For hats with cardboard brims, avoid submerging the brim in water; spot clean these areas instead.

Always check the care label inside the hat for specific washing instructions provided by the manufacturer.
For our baseball caps, do put them in a cotton bag before chucking them in the washing machine. Personally, we like to put our caps through the gentle cycle of a front loader. However, if stains are severe or heavily soiled, we recommend that you first do a thorough spot clean before putting them in a cotton bag though the washing machine as a final step.
